Kowhai Cottage
The Kowhai Cottage is the go-to dog-friendly spot in Kaikoura. We understand you want to give your four-legged friend a good stay too and are happy for you to have them inside. There is space outside for them to relax and the gardens at Lavendyl are available for you to go for a stroll provided your dog is on a lead. Buster, our resident springer spanniel, is very happy to have a play with any new friends that come to stay, however it is up to you whether or not to take him up on his offer! Please contact us about pets before booking as it is not always possible to accommodate pets due to other commitments. Our pet policy is at the bottom of this page, please read it before booking to ensure you are comfortable with it.
It is a little bigger than the Mahoe Cottage at approx 45 sq m. However, the cottage was not built with children in mind so children must be supervised at all times when upstairs.
Upstairs there is a queen and single bed in the same space. These are made from Macrocarpa milled at Lavendyl and handcrafted by the original owner. An extra single bed can be made up for families with two children. There is also room for a travel cot. The outside door leads to a balcony where you can enjoy a cuppa and view of Mt Fyffe over Lavendyl’s gardens.
Downstairs is a lounge with a comfy sofa bed. There is a table with seating for four which can accommodate an extra chair when needed. The kitchenette area is small and basic but more than adequate to make breakfast and simple meals.
The bathroom is large with a spa bath and separate shower.
The French doors lead to the covered patio and private grassed area. There is a lemon tree close by; help yourself to fresh lemons.
The cottage was not built with the needs of people with limited mobility in mind. The toilet is not wheelchair accessible. People with limited mobility are unlikely to manage the stairs as there is no stair rail. Similarly the stair design may mean they are unsuitable for people with limited sight. There is a comprehensive set of photographs of the interior of the cottage so you can determine its suitability for your needs.
You can order a home made packed lunch or evening meal. These need to be ordered 24 hours in advance.
The lavender and flower gardens of Lavendyl surround the cottages. These are separate from Dylans; guests are free to wander in them at their leisure. Guests should be aware that the gardens are currently undergoing a comprehensive upgrade which means some areas are out-of-bounds. The gardens are open to the public during the day. There is an on-site gift shop that stocks quality lavender products and other gift items. You can also order these online.
Lavendyl is also home to Buster. He is a super friendly springer spaniel and is always willing to provide companionship.

Daily Seasonal Breakfast
We provide a homemade continental breakfast for you to enjoy in the comfort of your cottage. A typical breakfast will have orange juice, muesli, yogurt, eggs from our chickens, and freshly baked bread. The eggs are fresh for you to cook as you wish. We pride ourselves on the bread selection we offer, from Scottish morning rolls to French baguettes, croissants, and Brioche made from scratch on-site.
Coffee, Tea & Assorted Beverages
We stock your cottage with a selection of tea, coffee, drinking choclate and milk. Relax with a cup of Lavendyl’s lavender tea. Speciality tea as provided at Lavendyl is available on request. We can provide speciality milk can be provided, but you must request this 24 hours in advance.
Dinner Upon Request
We can provide you with an evening meal if you wish. You must book this at least 24 hours in advance.
We stayed here on the way back to Christchurch. Nice quaint cottage, very peaceful and our dog Flynn loved roaming around the garden. Wonderful lavender products and the home made bread in the morning.
Will certainly recommend others to stay here.

The cottages have Wifi. However, this is rural New Zealand. Although the service is usually good, it can be a little slow at times.

All parking is off-road, but there is ample parking adjacent to each cottage.

Printer/Scanner
We can print and scan for you, but there may be a charge for this service.
Washer & Dryer
Our laundry machines are in an area not accessible to guests, so you can’t do your own laundry. We will launder for you: Give us your washing, we will wash and line dry it and return it to you ready to fold. If it is wet, we will tumble dry. The real bonus here is that you don’t have to spend valuable holiday time on laundry.
Barista Coffee
The on-site shop has Barista coffee and lavender treats.
House Rules
Smoking is not allowed in any of the rooms or balconies. If you do smoke, then you may be charged for cleaning. Smoking is permitted outside only.
Similarly, candles and incence may be burned outside but not inside or on the balcony. This is due to the fire risk they pose.
Guests may not cook odoriferous foods e.g. sea food, curry, etc inside. It is permissible to cook these outside the cottage. An additional cleaning charge of $20 will be made if this condition is broken.
Guests must leave the cottages as they find them. An excessively untidy cottage, which requires additional cleaning, will incur an additional $20 charge. We will charge $20 for unwashed dishes.
We will charge for any damage to the room or property.
Cancellation Policy
Late cancellations have a significant impact on our small business, so we have a strict cancellation policy.
- Cancellation within 14 days is non-refundable.
- Cancellation 30-15 days prior is 50% refundable.
- Over 30 days fully refunded.
Checkin & Checkout
Checkin is available from 14:00. Checkout is by 10:00. We accommodate late checkout/early arrival where possible.
Quiet Hours 11:00pm to 7:00am
Guests are asked not to use the balcony during quiet hours so as not to disturb other guests.
Guests are asked to ensure that noise is kept down to a level that will not disturb other guests during quiet hours.
Guests are asked not to play music outside during quiet hours.
Pet Policy
Dogs are allowed in the Kowhai cottage but please contact us prior to booking. We do not accept young dogs because of the large amount of wood in the cottage.
Dogs must be kept inside or tied up outside during Lavendyl's opening hours.
Dogs are not allowed on the furniture nor upstairs under any circumstances.
Guests are liable for the cost of repair of any damage caused by their dog.
There is a $20 per stay per dog charge.
